Modern Kitchen: Before & After and What It Costs
Flat-front cabinetry, uncluttered worktops and restrained finishes keep the focus on how the kitchen works. Remodel scope determines the budget; a style choice alone is not a cost estimate. Compare the redesign preview with the original photo, then check published room costs.

Designing a modern kitchen
In this preview
The before is a stripped-out room mid-renovation. The preview turns it into a working kitchen: charcoal slab-door cabinets along the back wall and in a tall bank on the right, a white stone-look island with a waterfall end and its own sink, and three slim pendants above it. The brick wall, the hood position, the windows and the tall radiators stay. The preview also drops the plywood door at the far right, a reminder that an AI preview is a starting point, not a survey of your room.
Palette
Modern kitchens usually hold to two or three colours. Here dark charcoal cabinetry sits against white walls, a white stone-look top and the red of the existing brick. If your room has a feature like that brick, let it be the one warm note and keep everything around it quiet.
Materials and finishes
Flat slab doors in a matt finish, a stone or quartz-look worktop with a thin edge, and handles that are very slim or recessed into the door carry most of the look. Stainless appliances and a plain metal hood suit it; mouldings, glass-fronted uppers and busy tile patterns work against it.
Layout
The look depends on long, uninterrupted runs. Tall cabinets grouped in one bank, an island with a clear worktop and appliances built into the run keep the lines continuous. Leave enough clearance around an island for doors, drawers and people to pass at the same time.
What drives the cost of a modern kitchen
The style itself adds little; the scope sets the budget. Replacing doors, worktops and lighting on the existing layout is a smaller job than adding an island with its own sink, which needs new water, drain and power runs to the middle of the room. HomeAdvisor lists a minor kitchen remodel at $10,000–$20,000 and a major one with high-quality materials at $20,000–$65,000.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a kitchen modern rather than just new?
Restraint. Slab doors without frames or mouldings, few or hidden handles, continuous worktops and a small palette read as modern. A new kitchen with raised-panel doors and ornate hardware is new, but it is still traditional.
Can I get a modern kitchen without moving the plumbing?
Often, yes. The look comes mostly from door style, worktop and lighting, which can change on the existing layout. An island with a sink, like the one in this preview, is the part that usually needs new plumbing and power.
Do modern slab doors work next to an exposed brick wall?
They can, as this preview shows: the brick stays the single textured surface while the cabinetry around it stays flat and dark. Keep the other surfaces plain so the brick and the doors do not compete.
